WBWC November 2nd Annual Membership Meeting To Feature Statewide Cycling Advocate
At it’s annual membership meeting on Wednesday, November 2nd, the Washtenaw Bicycling and Walking Coalition (WBWC) will feature as speakers John Lindenmayer, League of Michigan Bicyclists' (www.lmb.org) Executive Director, as well as Howard Lazarus, City of Ann Arbor City Administrator. You do not have to be a WBWC member to attend, and the general public is invited to attend.
John Lindenmayer will update WBWC members on ongoing legislative efforts to improve bicycling in Michigan. A five-bill package was recently passed out the Senate Judiciary Committee and now awaits action on the Senate floor. Collectively, the bills will create enhanced penalties for drivers who injure or kill vulnerable roadway users (i.e. bicyclists, pedestrians, the disabled), create a statewide 5-foot passing standard, and improve driver’s education by requiring a specific amount of time be devoted to bicycle safety and awareness.
Howard Lazarus will be updating those attending the meeting on efforts to make Ann Arbor more pedestrian, disabled and bicyclist friendly. Before taking his position in Ann Arbor, Howard was Public Works Director in Austin, Texas for eight years where he oversaw, among other projects, the planning and implementation of bicycle, pedestrian and child safety programs. In an Ann Arbor News interview earlier this year, Howard said he's looking forward to learning more about Ann Arbor's plans for a new greenway trail through the city, what's known as the Allen Creek Greenway, and ways to improve the existing Border-to-Border Trail. He believes it's important to have a well-connected system of urban trails that can help address traffic congestion and issues of air quality and noise pollution.
